I am Karter, a 20 year old from just outside Birmingham. This blog will enable me to express and furthermore share my current interests and beliefs, with the main concentration being music and video, and more specifically the culture that holds those things up. I believe I like to look at things past surface level and become invested, rather than just consume.
I moved to London for uni and so far life here has exceeded all my expectations. I wanted to be at the so-called ‘media hub’ of the UK so I could meet like-minded people and be in a motivating environment which would push me to be my best self. I felt that Birmingham couldn’t offer me that – it seemed to be shying away from any creative culture (for example turning down the Channel 4 main offices to be based there), going the complete opposite direction to London. I am now surrounded by so many people who refuse to accept the almost engrained and formulaic way of life, and instead strive for better.
My reason to study Contemporary Media Cultures at UAL was because I wanted to mentally delve deeper into the world of media. The course gives the opportunity for a high level of discussion that I never really had experienced before uni, talking about topics from such an open-minded point of view. I love this as it’s a similar mindset to myself, and gives me confidence that I will be able to reach my goals in life with this way of thinking. The supposed lack of practical work was no issue for me as that can be learnt and done in my own personal projects.
